How has cyber technology created opportunities for workplace deviance?

Cyber technology, while offering numerous advantages for modern businesses, has simultaneously created fertile ground for workplace deviance. One significant way this manifests is through unauthorized access to sensitive information. Employees who might seek to exploit internal systems for personal gain can utilize advanced hacking tools and techniques to obtain proprietary data, financial information, or trade secrets. Cyber technology empowers these individuals to cover their tracks more effectively, making illicit activities harder to detect. As a result, organisations must invest heavily in cybersecurity measures and continually update these defenses to stay ahead of potential internal threats.

 Another opportunity for workplace deviance stemming from cyber technology is the facilitation of time theft. With remote work becoming increasingly prevalent, the lines between productivity and leisure can blur. Employees might misuse company-provided devices for non-work-related activities, such as streaming videos, browsing social media, or engaging in personal projects during working hours. This behaviour not only reduces overall productivity but also affects the morale of other employees who adhere to work guidelines. Employers are thus faced with the challenge of monitoring and managing employee activity without infringing on privacy. This balance is delicate and requires nuanced technology solutions that can differentiate between legitimate work and personal use.

   Furthermore, cyber technology enables easier execution of sabotage and harassment in the workplace. Disgruntled employees or external actors can employ phishing emails, malware, and other cyber tactics to disrupt business operations, damage company property, or compromise individual safety. The anonymity provided by digital platforms can embolden individuals to engage in behaviors they might otherwise avoid in a face-to-face environment. To counteract this, employers must cultivate a culture of cyber awareness and ethical behavior while implementing technological safeguards designed to detect and prevent malicious actions. Training programs geared toward recognizing and responding to cyber threats are essential components in mitigating the risk of workplace deviance facilitated by modern technology.
