Interning as an Information Technology Intern at the hospital has been an enriching
experience, providing me with invaluable insights into the intersection of healthcare and
technology. This reflective paper aims to delve into my observations, challenges, and
progress towards achieving my learning objectives during this internship.
One of the primary responsibilities during my internship was to assist in teaching nurses
about the hospital’s systems, Interactant and Lake Taylor. The Interactant system, primarily
used by the nursing department, facilitates patient charting and information access. My role
involved guiding nurses on navigating this system. This task was not only about imparting
technical knowledge but also about understanding the nurses’ workflow and addressing their
concerns. It was rewarding to see nurses gain confidence in using the system, knowing that it
would enhance their efficiency and patient care. The Lake Taylor system, on the other hand,
is utilized by management and other departments. Some personnel, like those in management,
have access to both systems. This dual-system access highlighted the importance of
understanding user needs and customizing training sessions accordingly. The hospital’s
reliance on Linux for its systems added another layer of complexity, as it required me to
familiarize myself with it and I had no issue with it seeing that I have taken linux classes at
school.
Throughout the internship, I encountered several challenges. One significant challenge was
addressing the varying levels of technological proficiency among the nurses. Some were
quick to adapt, while others required more time and patience. This experience taught me the
importance of tailoring my communication and teaching methods to suit different learning
paces. Reflecting on my progress, I am pleased with how I have developed my technical
skills and improved my ability to communicate complex information effectively.
