Week 11 Journal Entry 11 – Carter Hendrick

Some of the social themes I saw in this was first a common theme seen in many corporations and especially in Japanese work culture, as she says “Graveyard shifts” and these kinds of shifts that are 24/7 on call and constantly working. This is unfortunately a very common thing because of how many places wish to have all of their employees as available as possible. It is difficult to maintain a work life balance with these kinds of shifts and are kind of morally wrong, but sometimes people have no other choice.

Another theme I found was how cybersecurity jobs allow you to work anywhere and the average salary is larger in places with a higher cost of living. This is common with many jobs but cybersecurity is a lucrative and fast growing field that allows you to get a job anywhere you want as long as you meet the qualifications that could be different things like having a degree, certifications, a security Clarence, or all three.

Week 11 Journal Entry 10 – Carter Hendrick

This whole article is about how information war is the main type of war now and I completely agree. Information has been fought over for years because it is necessary in order to have an upper hand, that is the entire point if recon squads in the military and equivalents that have been around since ancient societies. Spy’s and stealth operations have existed for as long as two separate nations have existed, because to have the upper hand you needed more information. This is why it is now a main concern because it is easier to find information and systems have to be used in order to keep the information secure making those very valuable. When we go into a full information war it will be dangerous for everyone involved and the only way for us to combat it is to be educated on how to safely use technology. This article highlights some methods that are used to move information around to secure it and this is the exact same as moving your forces on a battlefield. I think that investing time and energy into information security systems is part of how we can keep our people safe, but it needs to happen fast because we do not know when or how adversary’s may strike.

I think that this is a good way of monitoring social media addiction. I do not use social media much but I have definitely used it to take my mind off of things every once in a while. I use Youtube a lot for white noise, background music, and watching DnD campaigns. I do not use many other social medias other than discord. I think this is a good way to measure social media addiction because this test is not about the amount of time sent online but instead about how it affects your life and relationships. Social media can very very dangerous for many reasons so it is critical that kids are monitored online, and more importantly taught online literacy.

Week 8 Journal entry – Carter Hendrick

I think the media has a big influence on how difficult people think cybersecurity, coding, and hacking is. It definitely can be difficult, same with everything else, but media gives the idea that you have to be really smart in order to understand cybersecurity or code. This isn’t the case, code itself is more like learning a language and cybersecurity is the same as building defenses for any building, it is just on a digital plane and sometimes also a physical one. I am not good at math but I can still understand code and algorithms just fine. It does not take a super genius to hack or code or create cyber defenses, its all the same as any other job or hobby, it just takes experience no matter how that experience is gained. There will be people who learn faster or are better with this facet of technology but those are the outliers.
