Cybersecurity is a growing field that has plenty of opportunities when it comes to choosing a job in the field. According to Indeed, there are “12 types of cybersecurity roles” (Indeed Editorial Team). Even though it might not seem like a lot of roles in cybersecurity many seats need to be filled in cybersecurity. According to most websites, in just the United States alone there are over 700,000+ jobs available in the cybersecurity field. When looking at what job I would like to claim in the field of cybersecurity it would have to be a cybersecurity analyst.
A cybersecurity analyst is someone who has undergone training in being a cyber professional that specializes in monitoring and preventing a cyber attack (WGU). As a cybersecurity analyst, I would have a clear understanding of social sciences, malware, cyberattacks, and cybercrime. Having said that, the social science of it can overlap with being a cybersecurity analyst. For example, as a cybersecurity analyst, I would have to know how a cybercriminal thinks or behaves. So in this scenario, I would be using psychology and sociology, which are both part of the social sciences. From what I have learned from class and the first couple of modules both psychology and sociology both play a part in understanding how humans think/behave with each other or in certain situations. Another way that social science plays a role in the career of cybersecurity analysts is when understanding archaeology. According to “Archaeology is the study of the ancient and recent human past through material remains” (Society for American Archaeology). As a cybersecurity analyst, I would be using archaeology when reviewing and investigating cybercrime.
In the cybersecurity analyst field, the job of a cybersecurity analyst can differ. For example, a cybersecurity analyst can have you being almost like a help desk for a company or have you help in designing and evaluating cross-domain solutions. I would like to be the person who is working and helping people that have become victims of cyber attacks. So almost like the help desk. Working almost like a help desk can have me working with a few marginalized groups. For example, what I have learned from class elderly are likely to become victims of a cyber attack. So I could work with the elderly who are part of the marginalized groups. Another example of how marginalized groups might need the help of a cybersecurity analyst is when looking at a person that has below-average intelligence (Garrett). For example, a person with below-average intelligence was to fall victim to a cyber attack. The cyber attack was a virus that got onto the computer because they clicked on a link for a free iPhone. I would as a cyber security analyst could help/assist the victim by getting rid of the virus on the computer. Lastly, in that scenario if the person was to steal banking information and send themself money. That person could have committed a felony, which would make him a part of a marginalized group.
When viewing how cybersecurity analysts interact in society it’s fairly normal. As a cybersecurity analyst, one of the traits you have to have is verbal communication and being able to adapt. The reason you need these skills is that you have to be able to communicate with your team or customers and adapt to an incident. So with most people in cybersecurity analysis having these skills, they can interact with people outside of work and develop relationships with people. In conclusion, I believe that I have the potential to be able to work as a cybersecurity analyst. As there are multiple benefits from it. There are endless opportunities as becoming a cybersecurity analyst.
