Four other majors offered by ODU that relate to cybersecurity are cybercrime, criminal justice, information technology, and cyber operations. These four majors are different but they do also relate to cybersecurity like pieces in a puzzle.
Cybercrime relates to cybersecurity through its through examination of cybercrimes and cyberattacks. Cybercrime and cybersecurity go hand in hand. Without cybersecurity, the efforts of those in cybercrime go to waste. But without cybercrime, cybersecurity is left with insufficient data and statistics about cyberattacks. In cybercrime, new cyberattacks are examined and studied. We can see how similar and difference these new attacks are from the past.
Criminal justice relates to cybersecurity by focusing on its legal portion. With criminal justice, we are able to see how many years in jail a cybercriminal can get for hacking or performing any malicious activity. Additionally, criminal justice shows us a little of the psychology portion of analyzing threats and attacks. We are able to see why and cybercriminals decided to carry out an attack on certain victims.
Information technology relates to cybersecurity by displaying some of the technical portion of cybersecurity. With information technology, we are shown the importance of being able to use various technological devices. To be in cybersecurity, one has to be tech-savvy. You have to be familiar with devices from Microsoft to Apple. It isn’t required but it is necessary since you will be dealing with all types of devices and systems.
Cyber operations relates to cybersecurity due to its technical and non-technical aspects. It delves more into the interdisciplinary portion of cybersecurity. In this major, technical skills utilized in cybersecurity are developed through hands-on labs. These hands-on labs are critical for students to gain a solid understanding of cyberattacks. For the non-technical skills, the interdisciplinary focus is sharpened by exploring theory. Exploring different theories is necessary to build and develop skills.
