Journal Entries Week 1

  1. Am I an entrepreneur?

I would like to see myself as a potential entrepreneur. I have always seen myself as aan opportunist when it comes to trying or learning new things because you can never learn too much. Based on the modules and the information I’ve learned so far about being an entrepreneur, I definitely did not understand that starting your own business was not that difficult, at least at ODU. With that being said, I do understand how much time and effort it will take to be successful. I think all it would take it the right idea and maybe even the right team of people, and I could see myself as an entrepreneur. My goal is to eventually be far enough in my field, cybersecurity, to be a private contractor and be my own boss. I see that as being an entrepreneur as well.

2. What is Success?

I see success as anything that a person wants it to be. Success is the level of accomplishment you set for yourself to reach. Success is different to everyone, for some it could be just making it out of the house and for others it could be getting a job promotion they have been working towards, either way its success. I do think that there is a societal influence on our impressions of success, which could make some feel like their success is overshadowed by others but that’s all on perspective. I have to remind myself sometimes that my successes and other people’s successes won’t always be the same and just be proud that I accomplished what I set out to do.

3. Am I a self-started? How well do I follow through on my ideas?

I do see myself as a self-starter and someone who has a lot of ideas and makes a lot of plans. As far as how well I do following through with the ideas, I am getting better. Being transparent, over the years especially during the peak of the pandemic, I learned to find interest that I enjoyed and learned how to stay organized in my space, which sounds small, but it ended up helping me a lot. The more organized I am, the more I feel like I accomplish things I want get done. I think this mind set can be partnered with being an entrepreneur because you need to stay organized with your business and be able to accomplish tasks daily.

4. How does ODU view entrepreneurship?

I did not realize how much ODU valued entrepreneurship and helping their students accomplish their business goals until this class. There is an entire center dedicated to entrepreneurship development and business goals. Learning about the Strome Entrepreneurial Center and everything that it has to offer students as far as giving them a space to create their business or product and they help student ensure their efforts continue outside of ODU was incredible. After learning about all of the options offered on campus and the connections that are offered as well is another reason, I have loved ODU and how they value their student’s education and goals.

5. What is my role in this eco system?

This question really stumped me when I first read it. At the moment, I would consider myself a consumer. I say that because I buy good and use energy however in the social eco system I am a student who also works for a small company as an office manager, so I am nowhere close on the entrepreneur level yet but see what it takes firsthand to run a business every day. So, at the moment, I will stick with my answer of consumer but eventually I hope to be a producer.
