After reading Andriy Slynchuk’s article on common internet activities that are illegal I was surprised by some, but absolutely not by others. I believe the five most serious violations would be: Illegal Searches on the Internet, Sharing Passwords, Addresses, or Photos of Others, Bullying and Trolling, Faking Your Identity Online, and Using Copyrighted Images.
Illegal searches on the internet is a no brainer, chances are if you’re googling how to make a bomb or hire an assassin you don’t have the best intentions. Sharing passwords, addresses, and personal photos of others without consent can put people in danger. Thats why you never answer if people ask you if ___ is working today without first confirming with the employee its safe to give out that information – same thing goes for online activities. Bullying and trolling is especially dangerous. Did you know that 13.6 percent of adolescents have made a serious or successful suicide attempt? Thank you Journal of Cybersecurity for that depressing but impactful fact. As for faking your identity online, catfishing, or identity fraud to steal other peoples information is catastrophic for those involved. Last but not least – using copyrighted images. As an artist I can personally tell you how devastating it is to have artwork stollen and sold without your consent. As artists make a living selling their work, taking copyrighted images and utilizing them without consent is awful.
