Because they enable sophisticated security systems that shield people, businesses, and governments from a range of threats, computers have made the world a safer place. Improved surveillance technologies are one way that law enforcement organizations can keep an eye on and stop crime, terrorism, and other security threats. Computers have also aided in the development of authentication and encryption techniques that protect private and stop unwanted access to sensitive data and conversations. Computers have also transformed emergency response systems by facilitating quicker resource allocation, coordination, and communication during crises like natural disasters and medical emergencies. This has reduced damage and saved lives. Computers have, however, also contributed to a decrease in global security by giving hackers access to resources and venues on which to conduct illicit operations. One method is through cyberattacks, which use ransomware, phishing, and malware infections to take advantage of holes in computer systems and steal data, interfere with business operations, and demand ransom from its victims. Computers have also made it easier for propaganda and false information to proliferate through social media and internet platforms, which has weakened institutional trust and caused political instability and civil unrest. Furthermore, as critical infrastructure and basic services become more dependent on interconnected computer networks, there are more avenues for cyberattacks that could bring down transportation networks, power grids, and healthcare facilities, endangering public safety and national security.
