Hunter Morgan – Journal Entry 5

  1. I would rank “For Money” as the one that makes the most sense, since that is one of the largest pools available for cyber attackers to jump in.
  2. Next, I would rank “Political” since people will pay millions to promote their political ideologies, it would make sense for a group of hackers to do it online. This way they can spread their ideas by themselves.
  3. I think the third option would be “Multiple Reasons”, simply because it can be a combination of little things that eventually make them want to commit a cybercrime. For example, if we take a look at the behavioral theory, it states that people do behaviors based on things they have noticed in others. If someone watches a few videos about hacking on Instagram, the algorithm will continue to present them more videos regarding that topic, thus exposing them to hacking many times throughout their day. They then might not c=have one particular reason to commit a cybercrime, but might just see if enough, and just decide enough little reasons is a good enough reason to do it.
  4. I think I would place “Recognition” as the next one, since people can become quite famous for committing cybercrimes. Groups such as “Anonymous” have even had TV specials cover their work, and so that might influence others to get similar fame.
  5. Next, I would put “Entertainment” since it is probably fun to see your work in news articles or on the television news. People might like the idea of showing their friends how the news channel is covering a crime they committed, and might even consider it to be funny.
  6. Next, I would put “Revenge” since people might be able to use cybercrimes as a way to get back at someone else. Especially in cases of cyberbullying, it might be an easy way for someone to retaliate without thinking that they would be punished.
  7. Lastly, I would rank “Boredom” just because I really do not think people would commit a cybercrime because they are simply out of things to do. Most people get bored, so there may be a few cases just since the potential boredom affects so many; however, the act of committing a cybercrime is not just something quick and easy to cure boredom. It would take lots of time, which I believe would just lead the person to get bored of the cybercrime as well.
