Hunter Morgan – Week 10
According to the Social Media Disorder Scale, I am doing perfectly well. I answered no to every question on the scale, meaning I have no issues from a social media point of view. However, I have never been to keen to be on social media, and do not even have any sort of social media downloaded anymore. The only one I ever had was Instagram, and even then, I never posted on it, just used to watch Instagram Reels. However, I recently deleted Instagram because I wanted to use that time to focus more on my religion instead, and better involve myself in my faith. I think that the fact these questions, and this scale even exists, show how much society needs a detox from social media. I believe that especially in the culture in the United States of America, the amount of screen time people spend is absolutely absurd. It even seems to start at a very young age, as these days, parents choose to give their child a tablet rather than spend time with them. More and more citizens, especially ranging from children to young adults, have completely absorbed social media into their lifestyle. It is a part of their life that they do not even realize they are addicted to. However, these questions are evident that it affects people in very negative ways. Ruining relationships, ruining their emotions, ruining their dopamine receptors, and most crucial of them all is that social media is quite literally ruining our society as a whole. People have stopped talking to people as much, and we do not communicate with real communication skills anymore. Getting delivered items or groceries right to your front porch, not going out to eat, not going to church, not participating in clubs or sports teams, not attending school events, and even not going in to work, are all the effects of the digital age. And the most vital issue of them all stems from social media, since people will prefer to text over chat in person or prefer to play video games instead of real-world games. All of these factors are playing a role in creating a lazy, “robot-like” society. I believe social media and online use has gotten out of hand, and we need to start becoming people again before it is too late.
