The Importance of Communication in My Future Cybersecurity Career
As I continue my education and prepare for my future career in cybersecurity, I am learning that communication is just as important as technical knowledge. Cybersecurity professionals are responsible for protecting information, identifying security threats, and helping organizations prevent cyberattacks. Although this career involves working with computers and technology, professionals must also communicate effectively with coworkers, supervisors, and individuals who may not understand technical information.
Communication Skills Employers Look For
Employers in the cybersecurity field value several communication skills, including active listening, teamwork, written communication, and the ability to explain complicated information clearly. Cybersecurity professionals often need to write security reports, explain potential threats, and provide recommendations to prevent future attacks. According to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) NICE Workforce Framework, communication and collaboration are important skills across cybersecurity work roles.
One particularly important skill is being able to explain technical information to people who do not have a background in cybersecurity. This helps employees understand security risks and encourages everyone within an organization to practice safe cybersecurity habits.
Communication Skills I Already Possess
I believe that some of my strongest communication skills are active listening, teamwork, and adaptability. As a student-athlete, I understand the importance of working with others, listening to instructions, and communicating effectively to accomplish a shared goal. Being part of a team has taught me how important it is to respect different perspectives and contribute to a positive environment.
I also believe that I am capable of adjusting how I communicate depending on the situation. Whether I am participating in classroom discussions, completing group assignments, or interacting with others, I try to make sure that my message is clear and respectful. These skills will benefit me when working with other cybersecurity professionals and responding to security-related challenges.
A Communication Skill I Want to Improve
One communication skill I would like to improve is public speaking, especially when presenting technical information to an audience. Although I am comfortable communicating in everyday situations, I want to become more confident when delivering formal presentations and explaining complicated topics.
In cybersecurity, professionals may need to present security findings to managers, lead meetings, or explain how an organization should respond to a cyberattack. Improving my public speaking skills will help me become more confident, professional, and prepared for these responsibilities.
I plan to develop this skill by participating more in class discussions, practicing presentations, and becoming more comfortable speaking in front of groups.
Reflection and Future Goals
Throughout this semester, I have gained a better understanding of how communication affects both personal and professional success. I have learned that effective communication involves more than simply speaking. It also requires listening, understanding different perspectives, and choosing the right way to deliver a message.
As I continue pursuing a career in cybersecurity, I want to strengthen my communication skills alongside my technical abilities. My goal is to become a professional who can not only identify and solve cybersecurity problems but also communicate solutions clearly and confidently. I believe developing these skills will help me become a stronger student, teammate, and future cybersecurity professional.
