Interview a Health Professional

Janet Youngs-Mcqiller has been a registered nurse for 20 years and is currently a travel nurse. As a little girl, Janet spent a lot of her time with her aunt, who was in nursing school and wanted to follow in her footsteps to become a nurse herself. She started working in a hospital as a registered nurse and later was referred by her co-worker to work as a travel nurse. As a travel nurse, Janet can make her own schedule, work from home, and get to work from her patients’ homes. Janet works 8 am- to 5 pm Monday through Friday. She mentioned that she travels 4 days a week and that 1 day she stays home and works in her home office. As far as traveling Janet said that she normally goes to her patients’ houses that live in Virginia Beach and Chesapeake, she has never traveled out of the state for patient care. In her position, she states that she often has patients with chronic conditions, and seeing them take their treatments and get better and watch them do things they enjoy, pulls at her heartstrings. My key takeaway from my interview was she recommended I start working in a hospital to get the feel of being in the medical field and later becoming a doctor. She says I could get so many other job opportunities and school benefits from it. She said, “Start out small, and make the goals achievable”.
