I’m doing well in those classes because I think they’re easy. Sociology was my favorite class because everything was so interesting. So, learning and understanding it wasn’t really a problem. Chemistry lab was easy too, because we would learn most of the things in Chem lecture, but for Chem lab we had to apply and work with real substances. Health Professions was also a quite easy class. I loved my professor, Ms. Waye. All her assignments weren’t hard at all, so it was more relaxing to do the assignments. The classes that I needed assistance in were Chemistry and History. I had never taken Chem before, so I entered the lecture not knowing a clue about Chem. History wasn’t really challenging, it was just that the work felt long and there was a lot of reading. I’m more of a watch a video and answer questions kind of student. The changes that I’ve made in studying were going to the Perry Library and the Web Center. I used to study in my dorm, but as time went on, I started to feel like my dorm was becoming very unmotivated, and I started to do a lot of my work and a lot of studying on campus and at home. As with any time changes, I always go at night. I feel engaged and motivated the most at night.

Transition to College

The expectations that I had for college was that it was going to be difficult. I knew I was going to have to study hard and long, I also knew that there was competition in getting into the nursing program. When the school year began it, all hit me harder than ever. I studied more than I’ve ever studied, lost a lot of sleep, and started procrastinating. I learned to go with the flow and keep up with everything, so it became a little easier and less stressful. The easiest challenge with living on campus has been being so close to all my classes and not having to drive. The hardest challenge was being away from family. I live like 2o minutes away from ODU, but being away from my family is hard even though they are close. I realized that my family is my motivation. Living on campus taught me a lot about myself and I cannot stand living in my dorm another day.

Major

I feel like I knew everything about my major before I started the semester. During the middle of the semester, I never had any thoughts on changing my major. My main thoughts were changing my career. In the beginning I wanted to be a Labor and Delivery nurse, but then I changed my mind and wanted to become a Pediatrician. After that I thought about starting as a Labor and Delivery Nurse, and then going back to school to become and Pediatrician. Another one of my main thoughts were plan b. What if I don’t get accepted into the Nursing program? What am I going to do? Are there any other nursing programs that I could apply for? So far, I do not have an answer. I thought about taking a minor and I talked about it to my Success Coach, but I never went through with it. I felt like if I am already struggling with the classes I have now, why am I going to add more stress to the plate?

Connecting to Campus

One problem I ran into this semester was tutoring. I tried to do tutoring for Chem, but It was always so difficult to set up an appointment. I wanted to do a one-on-one tutoring session in person, but they only had that for all the higher-level sciences. When I would go to the Chem building, it was always so unorganized, and I feel like they only had help for the higher up sciences. During the semester there were only 2 people that helped me, my sister, and her best friend. We all have the same major and most of the same classes, so we would help each other study Chemistry and History. I decided to play Intramural basketball at ODU, because basketball is my favorite sport and I felt like I needed to have a get-away from my work.

Guest Speakers/ Field Trips

The field trip that I liked the most was the zoo. I liked it because I love looking at and learning about the animals that were there. Also, I learned a lot about my professor, he is really funny. It was also nice, because while we were there, Mr. Lopez was teaching us more about the Sociology theories for one of our important tests coming up. He mentioned that it was 10 questions and only about those 3 theories, so I was eager to learn more about it.

Cyiara Wiseman October 27, 2023 09_HLTH 101 Mid Semester Reflection Study Habits The classes that I have been doing well in are Sociology, Chem Lab, and Health Professions.
