TalkAbroad Impression #1

My Talk Abroad went well.  This was my third talk abroad, because I have done this in previous classes.  My conversation partner was very nice, and easy to talk to.  I would say she was my favorite person I have talked to.  Her name was Monica, and she lives in Columbia.  She said there is a lot of traffic there, but she still loves it.  She enjoyed being in the city, which makes her put up with the traffic.  She is currently living with her family, which she told me about.  She said she has a couple of siblings.  After we introduced ourselves, we began to talk about stereotypes in our cities.  A few stereotypes she said Columbia has been them being known for drugs, violence, and drug trafficking.  She said the reason these stereotypes exist are because of the past.  Columbia used to be known for all these things but has grown out of it.  Still, people believe them to do this stuff, and most people do not.  She also mentions movies.  These movies depict Columbia as being these things and leads people to have false impressions of Columbia.  As we talked about these stereotypes it became obvious to me that the bad impressions people have of Columbia made her sad.  We began to talk about ways to stop stereotypes or prevent them.  Monica said that a way to prevent them was to educate people. By people knowing the history of a place and being educated with culture bad stereotypes can be avoided.  After we talked about that we began to talk about culture, Latinos, and traditions.  We both talked about our favorite tradition and then said goodbye.  Overall, I think my conversation went well.  I found it difficult at times to know what to say, but I felt like I could understand her.  I enjoyed learning about her thought on stereotypes and knowing the truth about Columbia.  Now I have a better cultural understanding of Columbia.  A few things I could improve from listening back to this conversation would be; come better prepared, talk more, and not to quote songs.  Still, this talk abroad went well, and I enjoyed talking with Monica.
