Category ARTICLE REVIEW 1

After reviewing the article Cyberbullying and Cyberbullying Ideation Among Jordanian College Students, I have learned that this article pertains to social science by examining how cyberbullying causes suicide in addition to also wanting to educate the youth about how cyberbullying can affect them mentally. In this study, they wanted to show the association between cyberbullying and suicide. Although the article stated that cyberbullying is connected to cyberbullied ideation and behavior, it is not the direct cause of suicide (Al-Badayneh,2024). Although it has not directly made someone take their own life, it is connected to psychological problems such as anxiety, poor hygiene, physical appearance, stress, and depression. In 2021, a study showed that 90 percent of suicidal deaths occurred from mental health, with cyberbullying being a contributing factor for depression, anxiety, and cyber suicide thoughts. The researchers noticed how the victims were depressed and had a hard time making friends and keeping healthy relationships due to the association of cyberbullying and suicidal thoughts. Due to cyberbullying, the individuals who were victimized had problems such as abdomen pain and constant headaches, in addition to mental health issues such as suicidal thoughts, insomnia, anxiety, and depression.

In addition, I noticed how this article showed how past and present data analysis was used to show the connection between cyberbullying and suicide. They also used a US survey that showed that 54 percent of young kids were affected by cyberbullying through forms of social media such as Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, and Instagram. In addition, that also used data from Canadian data that showed 50 percent of teens in middle and high school are either victims or perpetrators due to cyberbullying. This article also states that they had twelve governors select a total 1000 random college students to do a study to measure cyberbullying victimization on a scale. This scale included cyberbullying victimization, general bullying, cyberbullying perpetration, vicarious cyberbullying and self-reporting (Al-Badayneh,2024). This study also assessed those exposed to violence in the family, any types of violence and those who decided to participate in violence (Al-Badayneh,2024).

Furthermore, throughout the entire article, they have proven data from the past and present to show the statistics ranging from kids to adults who are either being bullied or doing the bullying. Two words that continued to pop up in my head from our week two module principles of social sciences and cybersecurity were determinism and Empiricism. Empiricism is one of the words because social scientists can only study behavior related to the senses (CYSE201S (Module 2) Principles of Social Sciences and Cybersecurity). They can see people being bullied online; the data and surveys from past and present are shown to the researchers so they can see with their own eyes. In addition, determinism means that behavior is caused, determined, or influenced by preceding events (CYSE201S (Module 2) Principles of Social Sciences and Cybersecurity).

The topic highlight of this article wanted to show the connection between cyberbullying and suicide. Cyberbullying can cause individuals to have psychological issues such as mental health, anxiety, and depression, which are all connected to suicide. By doing this study, this article wanted to educate the youth about how cyberbullying is a threat and can influence an individual lifestyle.
