Computers are a essential part of our society, to interact with most people, you will need access to a computer to some degree. Whether that be a traditional computer or a smart phone, one will need to use it. With that in mind, we need to keep them safe from all forms of cyberthreats, but how do we know if they are safe. Cybersecurity uses many means to tell a user if their device is safe from threats. These are things such as Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS), Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR), malware analysis, or vulnerability scanning. Most of these can be used with a typical anti-virus software for said device. Another option is to test your defenses with programs that prob your defenses and will test your firewall. Also check and test your settings both on your computer and on applications that you use for any access that you have granted, like social media apps. Computers have overall made the daily lives of people easier and faster then ever before them. However, they have also made our lives safer in ways such as allowing for fast and timely response for emergency personnel, such as fire department, medical, and police force for an emergency. Instead of relying on word to mouth communication of the nature of an emergency and the location, it can all be transmitted directly to the appropriate agency. In physical security computers have made homes and business safer, through the use of security systems cameras, alarms, automatic locks, and other detection systems. This gives individuals the ability to at least deter criminals if not catch them outright in the act. Before one had to only rely on the physical security and integrity of basic locks and self defense measures. Computers have also given way to security measures such as metal detection, x-ray scanning, and infrared scanning. These have come to revolutionize airport and public security at large events, ensuring fast and detailed searches for weapons identifying dangerous individuals. Inversely computers have also had the opposite affect on safety. Computers can allow criminals to access and steal private information such as social security information, birthdates, and addresses. Computers and the internet have given rise to cyber bullying, endangering those targeted across distances. Lastly computers have allowed for so much autonomy in the world that is heavily relied on and widely used. This allows for all that automation to be hacked or tampered with, and with the heavy reliance on them, an attack on them can be devastating to society.
