Introduction
Within a society where companies and organizations are continuously implementing new types of technologies to enhance their productivity and efficiency, the field of cybersecurity within the study of social sciences has developed into a critical area of discussion. Given how much the modern world relies on interconnected digital networks, it is critical to examine the consequences, difficulties, and contributions to cybersecurity using a social scientific approach. Reviewing the article, “Cyberbullying and Psychological Stress among Female Employees” by Mohammed Doghan and Saman Arshad, the authors discuss the increase in incidents where female employees are being cyberbullied by their colleagues.
Principles of Social Science
The study of social science have several main principles that the article started earlier relates to all of them. Starting with relativism, relativism is the idea that all things are related in some way or another and that changing one will change another. For example, when a female employee denies their bosses advancement for something intimate, the boss may try to get some revenge by cyberbullying that female. The personal life of the boss and employee are related, affecting the chemistry in the work environment, then causing a decrease in the workers productivity, commitment, and their psychological well-being. Moving to objectivity, the study done by the author is in a value-free manner. This means that the authors developed the study and the article with the intention to only display the results at the end and not promote any specific opinion or point of view. Parsimony is the idea that the authors keep their findings and results in the simplest form possible. The readers of the article may not understand the in-depth explanation of how the experiment took place, but they can understand, “instances of cyberbullying is increasing” (Al Doghan 2023). Empiricism takes place when the conductors of the experiment only study the behavior that is real to the human sense, for example, females who are cyberbullied experience a decrease in their psychological wellbeing. On to ethical neutrality, the authors of the article must adhere to a set of ethical standards when they conduct their research and did so by not pushing any boundaries of the people the experiment is being conducted on. Finally looking at determinism, the principle states that behaviors are caused, determined, or influenced by events leading up to the occurrence. Females being cyberbullied had to do something to someone in order to be bullied in the first place.
Conducting the Experiment
Mohammed Doghan and Saman Arshad developed the hypothesis that “workplace cyberbullying negatively influences the organizational commitment of female employees” (Al Doghan 2023). The research being conducted is a multimethod research, by using surveys and an archival research method, meaning the scientists are studying the archives of previous records of past researchers. The measurement scale utilized for determining the workplace cyberbullying is from an empirical investigation conducted by Farley et al. by 2016 and the measurement scale utilized for the psychological stress was developed by Banks et al. in 1980 (Al Doghan 2023). These records are then used to conduct survey on consenting individuals. The data recorded was a quantitative numerical data that was then was analyzed within the structural equation modelling (SEM) using a two-step approach. In the first step, the measurement model was assessed to make sure the instruments quality, then the second step was the examination of the structural model to verify the study’s hypothesis.
Contribution to Society
Recently in class, the discussion has been about revenge porn and effect that can have on someone that it within the videos. Revenge porn is a type of cyberbullying and aligns with the topic of the article discussed earlier. When workplace romance turns intimate, it can lead to a lot of drama between the two co-workers and cause a hostile work environment when the two decide to end things. The male may want to get revenge for causing him to be embarrassed by cyberbullying the female in the workplace. The experiment done in the article challenges the female individuals to come out and express their experiences that may have been traumatizing and difficult to overcome. The article also challenges the males by informing them what is classified as cyberbullying, if they were never informed about it in the past. The males then can reflect on their actions and change their ways to help the females have a safer work environment. Overall, the article and experiment contributes to society in the way that more can be done to prevent cyberbullying and understanding what constitutes cyberbullying can help people either find help when it occurs or be conscious about their actions.
Conclusion
After reviewing the article by Mohammed Doghan and Saman Arshad, the reader can see how the studies done can relate to all the principles of social sciences by using surveys and archival research methods. The research methods are done to help support the hypothesis that cyberbullying in the workplace can negatively impact the organizational commitment of female coworkers. The results found can help contribute to society by informing people about cyberbullying, how often it occurs, and what to do when it happens to themselves. If you see cyberbullying taking place, take action and report the incident to someone higher up.
