Prompt: Review Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and explain how each level relates to your experiences with technology. Give specific examples of how your digital experiences relate to each level of need.
When it comes to Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs, I feel that humanity has accustomed itself to requiring technology to reach almost every level of the needs that Maslow presents. With the first level being physiological needs, we can assume that the act of obtaining food water and shelter are not technology dependent, but then we would be wrong. Without tech such as delivery vehicles, mass farming machines, and the creations of the pesticides we use to keep our crops healthy we wouldn’t be able to achieve nearly as much of the resources that we are presented with today. In terms of Safety and security we again stand on the front door of technology, wanting. We require tech to keep our personal identifying information protected, to do our banking, and to protect our homes from the un invited. With Love and belonging we get a bit of breathing room due to some being able to access family without using technology but for those without, tech allows for them to reach a community that they may have never thought was possible without being able to access the web and search out their interests. This also goes with self-esteem. While many are able to say that they have a strong self esteem, due to the media we have access to they may feel their self esteem wain and are not able to promote themselves without finding those who think, dress, or look similarly to themselves. Finally, when it comes to self-actualization, I personally don’t believe that technology is required. Experience and literature can help leaps and bounds more than accessing forums or different sites on the internet. It allows for us to explore ideas and discover things within ourselves that may have laid dormant.
In total, the hierarchy Maslow promotes doesn’t wholly require technology, but in todays age it as certainly become a necessity to achieve most of the stances he presents.
