What is the overlap between criminal justice and cybercrime? How does this overlap relate to the other disciplines discussed in this class?

Criminal justice and cybercrime have a significant connection. Cybercrimes require advanced and unique criminal justice systems. Criminal justice systems have to continuously adapt in order to address cybercrimes as they continuously evolve. Some things that criminal justice systems have to adapt in order to combat cyber crimes are the investigation process, the legislation, the international collaboration, and the prevention of cybercrimes.

Criminal justice systems must adapt their investigation process when addressing cybercrimes, as cybercrime investigations require unique specialized skills. When investigating cybercrimes, the criminal justice system requires expertise in digital forensics, network analysis, and cybersecurity. When prosecuting cybercrimes, the prosecutors must also have an extensive knowledge of laws and regulations regarding cybercrimes.

The legislation also needs to adapt in order to combat cybercrimes. Governments enact laws and regulations to target cybercrimes. An example of this is the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA), enacted in the United States. This establishes punishments for offenders, and outlines investigation and prosecution procedures regarding cybercrimes.

Being that cybercrimes can cross jurisdictional boundaries, criminal justice systems require international collaboration. There are multiple international organizations that coordinate the sharing of information between different countries. This makes it possible for criminal justice systems to investigate and prosecute cybercriminals that operate across borders.

Criminal justice systems also work to prevent cybercrimes. They do this through many different methods. Some of these methods include public awareness campaigns, educational initiatives, and cybersecurity training programs. By making the public more aware of these cybercrimes, criminal justice systems can reduce incidence of cybercrimes.

Overall, the overlap between criminal justice and cybercrime is significant. The overlap emphasizes the need for criminal justice systems to establish an advanced, unique approach to combat cybercrimes. This overlap relates to the many cyber threats that are discussed in CYSE200T. All the cyber threats that are discussed are the issues that the criminal justice system are continuously adapting for.
