We live in a world where technology is advancing at a rapid pace everyday. It is an extraordinary thing that technology is advancing. We benefit from this, but there are many dangers to this too. We are going to talk about the ethical issues of storing electronic information about individuals which can be a dangerous thing if it falls into the wrong hands. The first issue is privacy, let’s put this into a corporate aspect. Let’s say a customer wants to buy a product from the company. What do they have to give up in order to buy that product? They have to give the company their name, phone number, email, and most importantly their credit card/debit card, essentially their bank information. That is a lot of private information that the customer has to trust the company with. The second issue is a security breach to that information. If the company does not have a good cybersecurity team that regularly updates the software and makes sure that there are constant security patches. Let’s say a breach does happen, the company needs to act fast to stop the hackers. The company and your information is at stake. Sometimes it’s not just hackers that hack into the system, it can be the company’s own employees who can steal that information and sell it on the internet. The third issue is that information can be altered, that means that the stolen information can be used in a way to sound and look like someone else. An example of this can be for instance your name is the stolen information and the person who stole that information can pretend to be you or they are just using your name. The fourth issue and the last one is who has the authority to your personal data. Your personal data comes down to the company that you provide it to, so make sure they are an authentic company.
Now let’s talk about how cybersecurity risks in the U.S. compared to a different country. Bangladesh will be the country which is my homeland. Bangladesh is a poor country. Here is an example: 1 taka (which is the currency of Bangladesh) is equivalent to 0.0091 USD, not even a cent. You can see the financial state of the country with that, cybersecurity is not much of a concern. That is what makes the country so dangerous. Hackers are born from not enforcing cybersecurity and their hackers will do anything to infiltrate into larger countries like us. There hackers are everywhere, their main source of stealing information is through telemarketing. They are most definitely not ethical hackers; they just want to make quick money. Unlike in America we have ethical and advanced hackers. Yet the risks in the U.S. are higher due to us being much bigger and having much more money. Bangladesh on the other hand is third world country so it wouldn’t be under threat of a cyber-attack unlike the U.S.
