CYSE 270/LINUX SYSTEMS

When I first began to take this course, I thought it was going to be quite difficult to understand the concepts, which it was in the beginning. As I progressed in the course it started to become easier to understand the material, understanding the importance of Linux Systems. Especially many of the services and websites individuals use run on Linux Systems. After taking this course it has equipped me with the knowledge of creating files, creating directory’s, changing directories, and much more.

To show what I have learned here are some assignments that I thought were interesting.

One of my personal favorite assignments was the Password Cracking assignment. This assignment put me in the shoes of a hacker, showing how long it can really take for them to retrieve passwords for individuals’ personal information. Using commands like useradd to create users and set passwords for them. Then using the John the Ripper tool to crack the user’s passwords.

One other assignment that I enjoyed was the Basic Network Configuration assignment. This assignment helped with understanding what IP addresses, Network Masks, and MAC addresses looked like. This assignment showed what would happen if we changed our virtual machines network connection from NAT to Bridged Adapter. This then affected the IP addresses, Network Masks, and MAC addresses.
