This Week’s Discussion:
- Why are you interested in cybersecurity technology?
- Select four other majors offered by ODU and explain how those majors relate to cybersecurity.
Good evening! There were actually a few reasons why I chose cybersecurity as my major. One being to learn to protect myself from the various forms of cyber-attacks and phishing schemes. The second reason being simply because when I was a young girl, I always said how I wanted to do a career where I can be in a position to help people, and what better way to ensure people’s protection as a way of helping them. When reviewing the material for the week, I was actually able to see a few majors that relate to cybersecurity. The first major is criminal justice, which relates to the exploration of how people are punished for committing certain cyber-crimes, and how it relates to other forms of law ethically. The second major is information technology because it forms a deeper understanding of the study, design, development, implementation, support, or management of computer-based information systems, particularly software applications and computer hardware. Engineering is another major that relates to cybersecurity because of the science and mathematics principles applied in this major. Most engineering systems are subject to increased cyber threats, many engineers who are involved in cyber are computer engineers, electrical engineers, and system engineers. Additionally, Psychology is a major that plays an important role in cybersecurity as well. Psychology includes a deeper dive into the mind and behavior of a cybercriminal. When discussing a few psychological factors that indicate why someone might want to hack, would include the availability of the item or information, commitment levels, importance level, such as authority and accessibility, and the trust levels between other people and organizations. Lastly, philosophy is a major that relates to cybersecurity. Philosophy relates by integrating reasonings such as logics, and evidence to back up systematics of cyber. Explaining topics such as why and which data is private, and the business’s ability to balance profits with serving the public good, and knowledge on cyberwarfare.
