Select four other majors offered by ODU and explain how those majors relate to cybersecurity.
Old Dominion University offers a wide variety of majors that are interconnected with cybersecurity. ODU allows students to learn more about courses in cybersecurity without having to major in the topic itself. The following four majors offered by ODU that relate to cybersecurity are Cyber Operations, Cybercrime, Computer Science, and Criminal Justice. The undergraduate major in Cyber Operations allows students to have an interdisciplinary education centered around cyberspace while simultaneously providing the ethical, legal, and human-centered components of it as well. It is considered a complementary discipline to cybersecurity because of the program’s emphasis on technology and the methods technology can be protected. The second major, cybercrime, coincides well with cybersecurity since the major mainly consists of classes surrounding criminology, cybersecurity, and information technology. Students interested in cybersecurity but want to have an emphasis in law enforcement and information technology are perfect for the cybercrime major. Cybercrime majors also learn more about technology-related issues such as cyber laws. The third major, computer science, is one of the most popular majors offered at ODU. In order to receive a degree in computer science, it is mandatory to take core and elective courses in cybersecurity. Additionally, those who are interested in software development and information security analysis must have firm background knowledge in cybersecurity to succeed in their field. The last major, criminal justice, is also related to cybersecurity since criminal offenses are now becoming more and more common online. Those who commit cybercrimes are met with the legal consequences imposed by the criminal justice system. Those who decide to major in criminal justice must take courses relating to technology, such as cyberlaw, digital forensics, and cyber criminology. Fortunately, for ODU students, the four aforementioned majors are not the only academic programs that relate to cybersecurity. Other majors like Computer Engineering and Database Administration include cybersecurity courses as well.
