Workplace deviance has been increasing in many ways because cyber technology has made it easy for disgruntled or unethical employees to affect businesses and their customers. Deviant workplace behavior can be described by employees lacking motivation to conform to or violate expectations at work such as having morals and ethics. A common way I have seen in deviating in a lot of places I have worked; is aggressive behaviors such sexual harassment or intimidation. The increase in technology has created opportunities to sexually harass or intimidate someone by having access to customer’s and other employee’s emails, addresses, or contact information. Another way technology has made it easy to deviate is employees misuse the access they may have and in government jobs exposing confidential information that may be confidential or secret information by taking pictures or plugging in a USB to a computer and downloading information with the intention of selling it or leaking the information although it may be detrimental to the business or the government. An example of this would be Edward Snowden, he caused huge debate on what our government should be able to monitor. Regardless of what we believe if he did right or wrong, he is a prime example of workplace deviance through misuse after he leaked CIA information to the media. He misused his clearance and his belief that our government should not have that much access to our information drove his actions. One of the other ways that our cyber technology development has made workplace deviance easier is employees who work from home and the freedom they have access to. Although they may be clocked into work, they may step away from the computer and be paid for more hours than they worked. Theft is another way to deviate in the workplace, it can be driven by the financial trouble an employee may have, When I was a manager, I remember the access that I had to overriding prices on the computer system and can see how that could cause major financial issues for a business. The misuse of fiduciary positions such as I had as been made easier by technology by just changing amounts or even money laundering for illegal businesses. The increase of technology has placed our society in a position where we must be diligent in cybersecurity and systems to detect when there has been a breach because of workplace deviance.
