Technology changes everything about our lives and has ultimately revolutionized the way we work, communicate, and collaborate in modern workplaces. However, this progress has also created opportunities for workplace deviance. Cyber technology provides employees with easy access to organizational information, networks, and data, which can be misused for personal gain or to undermine the organization’s interests. We had to do training when in the military to show us or for us to prove that we know the ways to prevent such opportunities for workplace deviance. The Cyber Awareness training is very extensive and covers a wide basis of what can and has happened. One form of workplace deviance that has become increasingly common with the use of cyber technology is “cyberloafing”. Where it refers the use of an organizations recourses and time, for personal purposes when on working hours. Things like checking your phone, social media, shopping, or anything that can lead to a loss in productivity.

Another form of workplace deviance is cyber harassment or cyberbullying. This occurs when employees use technology to harass or intimidate colleagues, either directly or anonymously. Having more access to information and knowledge alone creates the larger possibilities for anything to happen. Being able to do it in complete anonymity or attempt due to technological advances. There are obvious repercussions for cyberbullying and this behavior can have serious consequences for the targeted employee’s mental health and well-being, as well as for the workplace’s culture and reputation. Giving a company that allows or tolerates such behavior a terrible public image. Cyber technology has also created opportunities for data theft and cybercrime. Cyber technology has also created opportunities for data theft and cybercrime, such as selling valuable military information/ documents.

Any advancements in technology are going to come with its drawbacks and adding the “What if?” questions. I believe that there will always be those that choose to misuse technology in every aspect of life. It is true, while cyber technology has revolutionized modern workplaces, it has also created opportunities for workplace deviance in almost every aspect. With more advancements there only increases the possibility for deviance and misuse.
