Cybersecurity programs have a lot of costs as well as benefits in the business atmosphere. For one, a huge cost is an implementation. Costs to a cybersecurity program include, but are not limited to cybersecurity professionals that need to be hired, backup system hard drives, network security, IT specialists, etc. There are a lot of monetary expenditures that are necessary to ensure that a businesses’ organization is safe and free from unethical criminals who will try to steal from them. In tandem, this is a benefit of a cybersecurity program. Due to the fact that technology has grown so much over the years, businesses have learned to make redundancies and controls to safeguard their organizations. Businesses can leverage cybersecurity programs to limit the possibility of a breach from happening. Businesses, however, are able to benefit from cybersecurity programs by being more efficient and having less downtime in the given workday albeit from a malicious attack on the business like a DDoS attack, or from malware attempting to be installed on an employee’s computers. Another benefit from having a cybersecurity program would be that a business can confidently keep trusted company secrets internal, such as a design to a particular product that they either have a patent over and/or something that they do not want to have released to the public. Cybersecurity programs can also include annual or semi-annual cyber awareness training. This may or may not incur a cost to the business, but ultimately, businesses can benefit from knowing that their employees are all trained and held accountable for cybersecurity-related information. This also greatly increases the cybersecurity footprint of a business as every employee is trained and knows how to respond to a given cyber threat. The implementation of multi-factor authentication, which would be part of the cybersecurity program, would also allow businesses to have accountability over who is accessing certain things within the organization, so long as they’re authorized. This would benefit a business because it is much harder to gain access to systems with multi-factor authentication, whereas a criminal or even a coworker could easily just see and steal a user login and pretend to be someone they are not.
