4 Majors Related to CYSE That ODU Offers:

Four majors that ODU offers that relate to cybersecurity are Computer Science, Cyber Operations, Cybercrime, and Computer Engineering.

  • CS:  Computer Science teaches code writing like python, C++, and HTML in order to create software and applications.  These applications are then used toward every day usage of computers.  This code and language use can make a new firewall and internet security framework, or it could be used to weave exploits together in order to attack other computer systems.  This is where this relates to cyber security as these languages are used in cybersecurity jobs.
  • CO:  Cyber Operations relates to cybersecurity because it puts emphasis on technology and technical aspects that all computers operate on.  According to the Old Dominion University course catalog, this major emphasizes on “attack, infiltration, exploitation, defense, mitigation, and recovery.  These are all key fields that cybersecurity specialists need to assess while they conduct their career and the reality of system attacks that they would have to deal with.
  • CC:  Cybercrime major prepares students for future careers with fortified abilities to write, verbally communicate and utilize high levels of mathematics.  This discipline focusses on teaching laws and criminal investigation regarding cyberspace and common C+ language use.  Cybercrime relates to Cybersecurity because cybercrime is something that Cybersecurity specialist have to keep in mind as there are many laws, rules, and regulations pertaining toward the usage of computers and the internet.  While still being augmented and having a lot of gray areas within, Cybersecurity has to keep in mind that there are many illicit activities that can be conducted and Cybersecurity specialists live on the bleeding edge of ethical and unethical
  • CE:  CE teaches technical skills under the umbrella of computational assets.  CE provides the know how of every physical part of hardware that computers utilize to execute many complex tasks.  These skills relate to cybersecurity for obvious reasons that cybersecurity revolves around the usage of computers.  As technology and hardware specifically grows, we see an increase in cybernetic ability from computers.  For instance, loading times from an old and traditional 5.25” floppy that I grew up with, all the way to dedicated solid state drives that instantly load things with no issues.
