Describe four ethical issues that arise when storing electronic information about individuals.

One issue regarding the storage of other peoples’ information via electronic means is that the information can be accessed virtually by anyone.  Privacy is lacking when peoples’ information can be accessed and even then, sold after obtained by someone who should not have accessibility to that information.  This is a massive issue that has laws associated with it such as Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), which governs the use of personal and medical information in the health industry.  While this act is in place and businesses that have to follow this regulation do what is legally necessary of them to safeguard their clientele’s information, that does not mean that information could be mishandled, leaked, and/or stolen.  Another issue that arises when electronically storing individuals’ information is when those breaches do in fact occur.  That information is able to be exploited by such means of being sold, used against the person whose information was stolen, etc.  Another issue is that the individuals whose information that is used and/or sold is not authorized to be used and/or sold as they did not consent to it.  A third ethical issue that arises is the integrity of the information could be compromised.  If someone wrongfully accesses and augments files under the individual’s profiles, then the integrity comes completely to question and can make a large mess on the company’s business and the individual’s life (such as getting the wrong medication for the wrong diagnosis).  A fourth issue that can arise in storing an individual’s information electronically is that it can get lost.  If the information is lost, this can completely ruin an individual’s life.  Valuable information that might not be recoverable could leave an individual without many options to do things.  If information is lost, the individual could lose substantial amounts of money, or they could lose their ability to access things that are imperative to their day-to-day functions.
