I am interested in cybersecurity for various reasons, a significant reason being that daily life has become increasingly intertwined with technology, leading to many potential opportunities for malicious activity that can disrupt our way of life. Many live their lives oblivious or simply ignoring that they are constantly under threat of cyberattacks, and steps should be taken to mitigate the potential damage that results from these events. Cyber-attacks have the potential to be catastrophic, mainly when critical infrastructure is a target. A significant inspiration for my interest in cyber security was learning about cyber-attacks against the United States and its allies. Another point of inspiration was the United States launching cyber-attacks against targets such as the Iranian nuclear facility, in which Stuxnet was deployed, catastrophically disrupting Iran’s nuclear program. There is potential for a world where citizens are informed about the dangers associated with technology and how this can impact daily life. Everyone works together to prevent those with malicious intentions from terrorizing and exploiting the public. While I have always been fascinated by technology and cyber security, I am particularly interested in the offensive roles associated with cyber technology. Cybersecurity is heavily involved with problem-solving and constantly trying to outsmart and stay ahead of your opposition. I have always enjoyed problem-solving, which is why cybersecurity stood out to me as a major. I previously had a job in high school where I did some IT work for a public library. While my position mainly entailed managing some antivirus programs and keeping the devices up to date, I was provided with an opportunity to make a difference in the community and help those who were not as proficient with technology. My goal while pursuing a cybersecurity degree at ODU once I have entered the workforce is to make a difference.
