Four majors related to cyber security offered by ODU are computer science, Computer engineering, Information technology, and criminal justice. Computer science and cyber security are very similar, as cyber security is a subfield of computer science. While cyber security focuses primarily on protecting networks or devices that could be vulnerable to attack, computer science is a broader field and generally requires more math and programming. Computer engineering is also closely related to cyber security as both have a role in ensuring the protection and security of networks and devices. The main difference between cybersecurity and computer engineering is that computer engineering generally focuses on physical aspects of protection using design and architecture.

In contrast, cyber security focuses more on protecting networks and devices already in use. Information Technology is similar to cyber security as they both are involved in the security of the technology. Despite the similarities between information technology and cyber security, information technology is a significantly broader field and offers numerous specializations. Information technology primarily focuses on the physical protection of technical systems, while cyber security mainly focuses on the data within the device or network. Information technology is responsible for successfully implementing critical systems and the subsequent monitoring of those systems to ensure proper function within a company or organization. Criminal justice is a field of study related to cyber security because of cybercrime. Cyber crimes are common in society as most aspects of life are intertwined with technology. Mobile banking, online shopping, and virtual communication have produced opportunities for cybercriminals to engage in illegal activities such as identity theft, DDoSing, Phishing, and other harmful acts. Therefore, cybercrime presents a need to investigate and prosecute those who engage in illegal cyber activities. The relevance of criminal justice in cyber security is increasing as cyber crimes are happening with increased frequency.
