When choosing a country to compare to the United States regarding cybersecurity risks, South Sudan stood out from other countries as it appears at the bottom of the NCIS list. While the United States has relatively high cybercrime, it also has the necessary infrastructure to protect itself against cyber threats. A significant reason that the United States is a massive target for cybercrime is that cybercriminals have significant incentives because there are endless opportunities to profit from these crimes. In contrast, there is very little for cybercriminals to gain from attacking south Sudan as their GDP is only about 2 billion dollars (USD). For reference, the United States cyber security industry was around 63.24 Billion dollars (USD) in 2022. The data shows that the United States cyber security industry is worth more than 31 times the net worth of the entirety of south Sudan. The United States is under constant threat of cyber attacks to the point that it is a never-ending battle between The interests of the United States and its adversaries. Much of the United States’ critical infrastructure relies on technology, leaving it vulnerable to ransomware or terrorist attacks. South Sudan, in contrast, has the minimal infrastructure, resulting in high-profile cybercriminals ignoring them. Most citizens in the United States interact with the internet in some way, whether through their mobile devices or some other method. South Sudan has minimal internet access and even less access to modern mobile devices capable of accessing the internet. A massive issue in the United States is ransomware. Individuals or individuals can have their data stolen or rendered unusable until a demanded amount gets delivered to the attacker. There is minimal benefit to using ransomware in South Sudan as the GDP is so low that profits from these attacks would be negligible and nonexistent.
