While the development of cybersecurity programs in business is by no means inexpensive, the benefits exponentially outway the costs. While cybersecurity solutions are expensive, a data breach or other cyber event will cost an organization far more than implementing cybersecurity programs. A cyberattack can sometimes be significant enough to permanently damage an organization’s reputation or cause it to shut down entirely. These attacks are particularly damaging to small businesses that may not have the resources to recover. Another potential expense resulting from the lack of a proper cybersecurity program is the organization’s liability for any personal information stolen. If confidential information is stolen, the organization could be held liable if sued by the individual whose information was stolen. An organization would be in an even worse position if the individual could prove that the organization failed to take the necessary precautions to protect the stolen data. A potential benefit of implementing a cybersecurity program in an organization is the competitive advantage it gives them. When a potential client or other organization is looking to do business, they are more likely to choose the option with superior security over the organization with minimal to no protection. Cybersecurity programs are versatile as they can be customized to fit a particular business model and later adapted and changed as needed throughout the organization. The cyber security needs of an organization can be determined in an initial assessment and adapted from that assessment as required. With the growing influence of technology in the modern work environment and the subsequent rise in cybercrime, it is generally in an organization’s best interest to invest in a cybersecurity plan as even though it may cost more upfront, it will almost certainly save them much money or even from a complete loss of their business in the future.
