Cybersecurity has become an increasingly prominent field and subsequently gained the attention of popular media. As with most things, the media dramatically exaggerates hacking and cybersecurity to make them more appealing to the audience. An example could be actors running their hands across a keyboard followed by pressing enter and delivering the legendary line “I’m in.” Flashy graphics, intricate visualizations, and intense background music add excitement that may captivate audiences but diverge significantly from the more mundane reality of hacking, which is often a slow, meticulous, and less visually exciting process. Moreover, movies tend to oversimplify hacking techniques, presenting unrealistic scenarios where hacking is a magical solution to any problem. The use of jargon and technical terms may sound impressive, but it often oversimplifies the complexity of real-world cybersecurity practices. While these exaggerations make for entertaining media, they contribute to a distorted public perception of hacking and cybersecurity, creating misconceptions about the nature of cyber threats and the professionals who defend against them.
