Journal #9

Complete the Social Media Disorder scale. How did you score? What do you think about the items in the scale? Why do you think that different patterns are found across the world?

During the past year, have you …
• regularly found that you can’t think of anything else but the moment that you will be able to use
social media again? No, while I regularly use social media in my free time, I have many hobbies that occupies my time.

• regularly felt dissatisfied because you wanted to spend more time on social media? No, social media is something that i enjoy using but I have never found myself wishing I could use it more.

• often felt bad when you could not use social media? No, while sometimes not having access to social media is inconvenient, I cannot say that not having access has negatively impacted my mental state.

• tried to spend less time on social media, but failed? No, I once stopped using all my social media for several months and it really had no effect on me.

• regularly neglected other activities (e.g. hobbies, sport) because you wanted to use social media? No, I have never chose to use social media rather than playing sports or participating in my hobbies.

• regularly had arguments with others because of your social media use? No, I really only use social media passively, some days I forget that I even have any social media.

• regularly lied to your parents or friends about the amount of time you spend on social media? No, I genuinely don’t use social media frequently to warrant lying.

• often used social media to escape from negative feelings? Never, I usually go to the gym or hangout with my friends if I’m feeling bad, I have yet to find social media to improve my mood.

• had serious conflict with your parents, brother(s) or sister(s) because of your social media use? No, social media is not a significant enough part of my life to negatively impact my relationships or cause arguments with my family.

After completing the test, it is clear that I do not have a social media disorder. While I enjoy using social media, I wouldn’t say that it is of any significant importance to me. While I was genuinely surprised that some of the questions were serious, I can see that some people may have a genuine disorder causing them to spend too much time on social media leading to a negative effect on their mental state.
