Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs is a psychological theory that arranges human needs into a five-tier pyramid. Each level represents a different category of needs, and individuals are believed to strive to fulfill these needs in a hierarchical order. Often associated with the physical world, Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs is undeniably applicable to our increasingly digital lives.

Physiological Needs: At the foundational level, technology has revolutionized how we meet our physiological needs. Online food ordering has become a norm, replacing traditional cooking for many. Smart meters monitor water consumption, and smart fridges dispense drinkable water effortlessly. Even temperature, regulated by smart thermostats, can now be adjusted with a simple voice command or even by software recognizing that a user has entered a room.

Safety Needs: Advancements in technology have reshaped our approach to safety. The haunting era of wired CCTV systems has thankfully come to an end as affordable, wireless cameras like the Ring doorbell or Nest systems enhance home security. Even something such as password protection has evolved; rather than storing passwords on paper, utilizing a password manager enhances online security and uses encryption tools to protect sensitive data.

Love Needs and Belongingness: In the digital age, social media dominates the landscape of belongingness and love needs. Significant portions of recent generations seek validation and connections through online platforms. Even dating has evolved in the modern age in the form of dating apps. Distance has become all but irrelevant as a result of instant online communications.

Esteem Needs: The pursuit of esteem finds new avenues online. Once a pastime, video games now evolve into avenues for mastery and accomplishment. Dedication to these games can lead individuals to become top players globally. Social media platforms provide another platform for esteem, as individuals share achievements, garnering praise and recognition from their online communities.

Self-Actualization: In self-actualization, technology becomes a catalyst for personal growth and creative expression. Most online classes allow for a more flexible and adaptive learning experience. Even art has been digitalized, creating new avenues for people to express themselves.
