Obtaining the CompTIA Security+ certification is currently one of the professional goals that I hope to achieve by November 2026. As I continue to develop my knowledge and practical skills in the field of cybersecurity, I believe that obtaining Security+ is likely one of the most significant milestones I can currently achieve. While I have significant work experience and a background in the topics covered by Security+, obtaining the certification will ultimately serve as proof of my competence in the field. After completing my bachelor’s degree in cybersecurity at Old Dominion University in May of 2026, I began working toward my master’s degree to build on that foundation. I see Security+ as an opportunity to demonstrate my knowledge beyond the classroom. CYSE 600 has been an invaluable tool in preparing me for the Security+ exam. I am currently studying the SYO-701 Security+ guide; however, this course allowed me to directly apply the concepts learned in several virtual environments. While knowledge is valuable, experience in applying the concepts is even better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
My preparation for the Security+ exam has involved creating notes, taking practice exams, and revisiting several concepts from previous courses. CYSE 600 offers pre-assessment and post-assessment quizzes that cover topics related to the Security+ exam. These have been invaluable in preparing and applying the concepts in lab environments. The Security+ SY0-701 exam objectives cover five major areas. These include general security concepts; threats, vulnerabilities, and mitigations; security architecture; security operations; and security program management and oversight (CompTIA, 2023). My real-world work experience has greatly impacted the way I approach this course. I have worked with Windows and Linux systems, Python, firewalls, tunnels, and hypervisors. These experiences give me practical examples to connect to ideas such as system hardening, secure configuration, and vulnerability management. I recognize that familiarity with these tools does not automatically mean I understand every security decision behind their use. Therefore, preparing for the Security+ exam encourages me to examine not only the technology but the significance behind it and the security implications that come along with its use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Overall, a major challenge that I continue to face is the sheer volume of knowledge that is covered by the Exam. While I believe that I have built a strong foundation through academics and real-world work experience, I recognize that I will need more preparation prior to obtaining this certification. Over the next few weeks, I plan to strengthen my understanding of concepts that I feel somewhat unfamiliar with and understand how and why they can be applied to real-world scenarios. Ultimately, it is my goal to obtain the Security+ certification on my first attempt. Subsequently, I look forward to being able to display this accomplishment as proof of my competence in my field. CYSE 600 has proven that concepts covered by this exam are undoubtedly useful in a cybersecurity or IT role, and I believe that this course, obtaining Security +, and continuing to gain real-world experience will help to establish me as a strong candidate for future professional opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
