How does cyber technology impact interactions between offenders and victims?
Cyber technology has significantly impacted how offenders and victims interact. The internet has brought forth a completely new market for criminals to exploit and attack victims. Interactions between offenders have with their victims can now be completely hidden until there is too much damage, the internet provides a new barrier that can have the potential to make concealing crime much easier and harder to track. Offenders are able to target people solely through the internet or use the internet to find the personal information of people they may be trying to stalk or harass in real life. Especially on social media, people tend to post an abundance of personal information that offenders may use against you. Another way the internet sets up people to be victimized is by sharing of something that was supposed to be private on a public form, shared without consent, or even used to blackmail. Next another way that criminals can use the internet to commit crimes is concealing their identity in order to trick a younger unsuspecting victim. This is widely known as being a predator where an older individual will coerce an underage victim by either tricking them or using a false identity to try and meet them in a location where they can take advantage of the victim. There are many more ways that criminals have been able to hide and alter their identity in order to trick their victims and it still happens everyday. It happens in many more cases than just predatory as well such as identity fraud many trojan horse scams and many more. The solution is not going to be an easy one, but every one needs to spread awareness to help prevent cyber crime and deter future cyber crime from occurring.
