There is no question that overall, computers have made the world a safer place. The following are three examples of how computers have made the world a safer place. First, we have the improvements of emergency response. Most modern cities have a dispatch center that looks similar to an operations center you would see in a military movie. A giant dark room filled with computers. At any time, a dispatcher can look at a map and see via GPS where emergency units are and dispatch accordingly. Further, when you call 911, in a few seconds they can have access to your real time location. Prior to computers, police and emergency personnel would have to rely on directions and memorization of where places are. Now they can punch in an address and start moving toward the emergency. Next, we have the improvements in security systems. Before computers, you basically had only a lock for security. With computers you can have a live feed of video streamed to whatever device you need to use to view your feed. With computers you can have an Intrusion Detection Systems that can use a variety of methods to determine if there is a breach such as, proximity switches on doors and windows, infrared sensors, lasers, motion detectors, software used with cameras detecting if the movement is a person (or a true threat) or some kind of animal. Next, we have improved safety in public transportation such as trains, planes, and automobiles. Without computers, pilots had to rely on celestial navigation at night, and maps and landmarks during the day. Today aircraft can take off, fly, and land on their own without the assistance of a human; and do it better. While pilots are still flying the planes, instead of looking up at the stars or trying to find landmarks on the ground, they can now use advanced navigation systems such as Inertial Navigation (using lasers and gyros) for dead reckoning navigation, triangulation via radio, RADAR altimeters, and GPS systems. None of this would have been possible without the advent of computers. Now as far as making the world less safe, computers have helped with that too. We need computers for advanced weapon systems, modern guidance systems on bombs and missiles, drones dropping grenades, etc. We can also use computers to breach the above examples. With cybersecurity professionals monitoring these systems and preventing intrusion, computers have overall, made the world a safer and better place.
