Symantec created an index of cybercrime activity that includes hosting malware, botnets, phishing servers, and how many botnet command and control servers there are within each nation. The top five nations are the US, China, Brazil, Germany, and India. Russia is number seven on the list. Spam makes up 72% of emails sent worldwide. Over half of internet traffic in general is just spam, with loss of human resources due to spam being $22 billion in 2004. The top spam sending countries being China, Brazil, the United States, and Russia. Most spam is sent from a type of malware called a botnet. Botnets are responsible for sending as much as 76% of all spam. A botnet is a network of malware infected computers that allows a user to control them remotely over the internet. Most victims of botnet hijacking don’t even know their computer is infected. It is estimated that 14% of all internet infected computers are infected with at least one botnet. The top countries known to host botnets are India, Vietnam, China, and Russia.
The United States is the most targeted country by phishing attacks, accounting for 60% of all worldwide phishing attacks. The average individual who falls victim to a phishing attack loses about $1800, while the average business loses $20,070 if the attack is successful. The top sources for phishing attacks are China, Russia, Ukraine, the United States and Brazil. Another form of internet fraud is the advance fee fraud scheme; the scheme is entirely social engineering. It’s a confidence trick where the person committing the fraud contacts a victim with a spam email about some type of proposal that the victim has to pay a small amount of money to receive a large amount in return. Small losses are considered to be from $200 to $30000 per victim over the course of six months. Higher losses can be as much as $210,000 over one and a half years.
