Cyber technology has had a massive impact on the way offenders can interact with victims. With the invention of the internet, especially social media and smartphones, with most of the population documenting their life, places they visit, pictures of their houses, essentially their daily routine, it makes it especially easy for an offender to communicate, stalk, harass, and find where they live.
Cyberbullying is becoming a more common problem. Cyberbullying is a form of bullying that happens through digital communication such as text messages and social media accounts. The bullying can come in different forms; sending threats through a messaging app, threatening through some form of digital communication, spreading rumors and lies, attempting to ruin reputations, sharing private information about someone such as photos, or any other type of message or media with the intent to cause harm to the victim or recipient. Cyberbullying can cause many mental health issues for the victim including depression, anxiety and suicide.
Stalking has become easier due to the internet and social media. On top of the issues that I mentioned above regarding sharing personal information on social media accounts, perpetrators can create fake social media accounts to befriend victims to easily keep tabs on them. People need to be made aware to not add strangers to their social media accounts and adjust privacy settings to friends or trusted people only. Another issue that goes along with social media is cell phone cameras geotagging photos; or adding geographic coordinates to media based on the devices GPS coordinates.
Another criminal activity made easier due to cyber technology is fraud and scamming. Criminals can use software to send phishing emails to any email address that they can find, typically by purchasing lists. They then wait for a victim to respond either via email or phone call and continue to attempt to extract money from the victim through a variety of means.
