What is the overlap between criminal justice and cybercrime? How does this overlap relate to the other disciplines discussed in this class?
With the advancement of technology happening every year and the growth of things connecting to the internet the distinction between criminal justice and cybercrime has become fuzzier and fuzzier. With this distinction, some things from both sides are starting to overlap. But before we talk about things that have overlapped, we need to get to know what they are individual. Cybercrime is a type of crime where an attacker will attack using a computer to attack someone else’s computer and network. Criminal Justice Is where some type of justice is being issued due to a person commiting a crime. So, now about the overlap. The overlap with these two is rather small being less than ⅕ of criminal justice programs including cybersecurity classes. But as the demand for cybersecurity increases every year, this will increase the number of programs that will include cybersecurity classes. The reason for criminal justice majors needing to learn about cybersecurity, because there have been laws to regulate cybercrime. So, eventually, people are gonna get caught doing these actions, and because of the internet being able to connect to almost anything. That is what they need to know about what goes into cybersecurity and what actions these criminals are doing to properly charge them. This overlap is small for now but it is growing. With this growth one day there will be such a great overlap that we will not be able to tell them apart, and that will be good because finally cybercrime will finally be regulated properly in the justice system. This will allow those who commit these cybercrimes to get sentence as they should. Also, allow stricter laws and make it harder for them to get away with it. This will help lower the chance of more attackers come because they will be worried about being prosecuted like others.
