In the cybersecurity world, human errors account for most breaches and threats. Implementing new technologies is an important part of growth and expansion. I believe there should be an even trade-off between training and adding cybersecurity technology.
Importance of New Technologies
The benefits of new technology are too vast for companies to ignore. New ideas are better stored and secured on newer devices. The main goal of any company is to make money and produce the best products and or services that are possible. This goal is supported by advancements in devices and machinery used in production. Those machines and devices are usually automated by SCADA systems which would mean new software and updates would have to follow. “This is important because it allows companies to maintain a competitive advantage and keep their products and services safe from competitors.” (Knowledgehut) Cloud services make data transfer and storage easier and more widespread. Without the proper allocation of resources, a company runs the risk of falling behind the competition.
The Importance of Training
Advancements come at a price and that price is an increase in security threats. Although new technology opens up new avenues for attackers, the greatest risk to security human error. According to Micke Ahola “in a study by IBM, human error is the main cause of 95% of cyber security breaches.” That alarming statistic screams out how important it is to train employees and end users. Most users do not understand the consequences of so much as clicking on a phishing link. Knowledge about threats would help employees better identify potential risks. Training about threats is only part of the need though. Employees also need to know how to properly use the equipment. Improper use could lead to damages that halt production and business operations.
Conclusion
While new technology adds to a company’s ability to stay at the forefront of innovation, improper training and handling could counteract all the progress made. As new technology becomes more available and widespread, employee training has to be at the forefront as well. Resources should be evenly distributed to ensure that the company is able to compete but also stay safe.
