Deviance in every work place is inevitable to some degree, but with the addition of cyber technology to most work places, it is finding a new frontier. Deviant behavior is amplified by use of technology, because workers have the ability to hide behind a false security blanket of their screen. Technology gives the illusion to the average worker that they have more freedom and less oversight than before, when in reality everything they do and say online is traceable. Jumping into examples of increased deviance, first disgruntled employees now have a new method of damaging the company. They could leave things vulnerable to attack on purpose or they can simply sabotage data or work stored on a shared server. Next employees with nefarious intentions can easily steal work from others, important information or misuse their provided technology for purposed contrary to company policy. If work is stolen, it can be sold online for profit, benefiting the thief and seriously harming the company. The online marketplace for data and personal information is also vast, so an employee willfully selling private information not only is a crime, but it also puts clients, other workers and the company in general at risk for cyber attack, hacks into adjacent systems and stolen identity. Overall technology provides criminals with the opportunity to cause more harm than before. Non criminal deviance also can easily rise. Cyber bullying is easily used. From company email chains, to social media presence, any employee, customer, or random person can cause harm. Technology has been a gateway to a wider range of deviance that would have not existed if technology hadn’t given it opportunity. There is an certain boldness that technology creates which is great for innovation, but harmful to progress if the wrong people are utilizing it.
