I was learning some of the same material in class that I needed for the exam. That gave me more time with the topics instead of trying to learn everything through my own studying.

The labs were helpful because I could put the information to use. Password policies were something I needed to understand for Security+. In the Windows lab, I could see the settings that control password length and account lockouts. It gave me something to think back to when I reviewed those topics.

Wireshark helped in a different way. I had read about the risks of sending information without encryption. The lab showed how to find FTP login information in captured traffic. That made the reason for using an encrypted connection much clearer to me.

I earned Security+ while taking this course, and I feel the class played a big part in helping me pass. I still had to study outside of class, but I was not doing all of the preparation on my own. The assignments gave me another way to work through the material.

A Challenge I Worked Through

Working full time while starting my master’s degree was a lot to adjust to. Adding Security+ preparation made it harder. I had work responsibilities and school assignments to finish while also trying to feel ready for the exam.

The hardest part was knowing whether I really understood something. A term could look familiar in the book, but explaining it without looking was different. That was when I knew I needed to go back over it.

I was stressed before the exam because I had put so much time into preparing. I wanted that effort to pay off. Having worked on related topics in CYSE 600 helped me feel more prepared. I could connect some of the information to a lab instead of only trying to remember a definition.

Passing was a relief. I was proud that I had done it while working and taking graduate classes. It also reminded me that I can make progress even when I do not feel completely confident yet. There are still things I need to practice, but I do not feel like I am starting from scratch.

How I Am Using What I Learned

At Triton Stone Group, I work with employee devices and help with onboarding and offboarding. This course helped me understand more of the security reasons behind that work. Removing access when someone leaves is not just another item to mark complete. Missing it could leave an account available to someone who should no longer use it.

My previous job at IPConfigure gave me experience building and configuring servers. CYSE 600 added to that background by having me look more closely at how systems and information are protected. I could connect the equipment I had worked with to the security topics I was studying.

I also recently accepted an IT help desk role with ePlus. I am excited to get more experience helping users directly. I expect there will be things I have not seen before, and I know a certification does not mean I will have every answer.

What I am taking with me is a better understanding of what to check and why it matters. I want to solve a user’s problem without overlooking security. This course helped me pass Security+, but it also gave me knowledge I can keep building on when I start the new job.

My Growth During the Course CYSE 600 helped me a lot while I was studying for Security+.
