E-portfolio week 13

The internet and social media has become the vast highway for offending and victimizing people on very high scales that are so impossible to imagine. More attempts of suicide happen on the web than they do in real life. You have depressed people lose their lives due to cyber bullying and it is getting worse by the day. They also seize the opportunity to use the web to find personal information about some and use it to harass and mentally abuse them. Same goes to stalking and there has been so many death threats and restraining orders set on people that it is ridiculous to the point where they use multiple accounts to target their victims. Like any other types of victimization, victims of cybercrime can experience and lead up to some serious consequences, emotional or not. First of all, a repeat victim of a cyber-attack might face serious financial or emotional hardship. These victims are also more than likely to require medical attention as a consequence of online fraud victimization. This means repeat victims have a unique and particular skill set of support needs, including the need for counselling, and seeking support from the criminal justice system. There are also cases, such as in cyberbullying or sextortion, where victims will not be able to speak to their family and friends. These victims feel too ashamed and scarred to share details with others and they will probably not receive any support. In such cases trauma can even lead to self-harm. Therefore, we see that online victimization can actually lead to physical harm.
