Journal #8

Assignment:

After watching this video, write a journal entry about how you think the media influences our understanding about cybersecurity.

Answer:

While most of the movies reviewed in the video were pretty close to how it is done in real life there are the rare examples that are not realistic to cybersecurity at all. However luckily as said before these are rare. Most of the movies, however, do not depict how things are done realistically. The movies that do, though, are also very rare. In general we can say that the media has given us a good representation of what hacking is like, all though in order to keep things interesting for the viewer they do spice it up a little more. Whether it is using technology we do not possess yet or completing a hack that is to this day beyond our capabilities, movies make hacking seem like a speedy process. In most cases the hack is executed with a press of the button, or the hacker finds all of his needed data in one night, while in real life hacking takes much longer. Media also depicts hackers as these one in 1000 people who are really good at coding or who are super smart. This, however, is not always true. People can get hacked by someone who has scammed them for information, or by burglars who just so happen to find their passwords written on a sticky note. Hackers do not need to be super intelligent and have a massive understanding in coding/ programming.
