After watching Davin Teo’s Ted talk I see digital forensic investigators as a small discrete unit similar to what internal affairs is to law enforcement. When there is a legal case, investigation, or an issue with an organization’s security, a digital forensic investigator is brought in to analyze and ultimately get to the bottom of what occurred. Similar to internal affairs, it is important for digital forensic investigators to remain a mystery when working within an organization to allow them to accurately detect when malicious behaviors occur. As the old saying goes “when the cat is away the mice will play”. The more people aware of a digital forensic investigators presence the more likely behaviors will change due to these issues being internal. Davin Teo in his Ted Talk referred to this as “finding the bad apple”. These investigators relate to social sciences principles, as they monitor the behavior of the suspects within an organization. Grasping and understanding of who, what, and why. Also, by communicating to suspects in the organization, which may not always occur to prevent a suspect from changing their behavior.

As the speaker mentioned in the video, he found this career through an email where he worked at the first digital forensic practice in Australia. I believe the speaker took a chance on finding a career in something he’d potentially find joy in doing oppose to just doing a job because it makes the most money. I think he found a career that fits him as a person and something he can wake up every morning and be excited as he drives to work. It is not easy to find a job in one job for one year, let alone the 17 years he has been in this field.
