Even today we can apply Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs to address people and their relationship with technology. Starting from the bottom we have Physiological needs, which requires our want for food, water, warmth and rest to be met before we ascend higher. Here we can also add our want of communication and pleasure through our cell phones and entertainment devices. Some people today cannot go anywhere without their phones as that is their primary mode of communication throughout the day. Once we have met all those needs, we can move up to Safety needs. These come in the form of security and safety. In the realm of technology, we can add cybersecurity to that as well as that gives people the peace of mind knowing that their data and devices are safe from theft and intrusion. Continuing up we have Belongingness and Love. These encompass our relationships with people. Applying this to technology is easy as we use devices and applications to communicate and remember our friends, family and loved ones. Esteem Needs is our next stop up the tree. Here we desire prestige and recognition. We can see this in technology too with a desire to be the best in mobile games or having the best Facebook page. Technology is a whole new venue for gaining a reputation and honors. At last, we reach the top with Self-Actualization. This is where we achieve our highest potential and best part of our creativity. In the world of Technology this can be seen in creating new applications or even a new way to bring people together online. Maslow’s Hierarchy is a very important theory that is just as relevant now with Technology as it was in the past.
