Every cybercriminal has a motive. Be it money, fame, or just plain fun criminals commit crimes with some intention in mind. Here I would like to propose a list, ranking my top 7 motives cybercriminals have for committing crimes.
- Multiple Reasons: This one ranks at my number one for multiple reasons (pun intended). Criminals are motivated to commit crimes if they have more than one purpose in doing them. For example, they would do a crime if it brings them money and entertainment. Nothing like having fun and making money at the same time.
- Money: This one is pretty straightforward, if a criminal or person is strapped for money and needs money as soon as possible, then they are more susceptible to committing a crime to get fast money.
- Political: Some cybercriminals are in it to prove a point. Hackers might perform a crime to promote an activist cause but at the literal cost of damage to a firm or a government organization.
- Recognition: Fame is a powerful motivator and this can invite criminals to perform a crime against a large firm or person in the pursuit of recognition amongst a group, community, or even a nation.
- Revenge: Revenge can drive anyone to dark places and that can lead to someone posting things like revenge porn in order to punish someone else.
- Entertainment: Some criminals commit crimes to watch the world burn. Criminals would commit things like a DDOS attack in order to see a firm struggle. Costing them time and money to stop.
- Boredom: There is nothing like a bored hacker. Some hackers will commit a crime just out of shear boredom and wanting to pass the time.
