This article, “Hacking for good: Leveraging HackerOne data to develop an economic model of Bug Bounties”, gives good explanations of the use of bug bounty policies. The article states that “…many companies are going even further, participating in bug bounty markets, where freelance security researchers (also called hackers) are tasked with finding bugs in corporate IT systems and code bases and cogently explaining them to the companies”. Companies provide hackers with monetary rewards. These rewards are called bounties. There are many advantages to bug bounty programs. Bug bounty programs help companies identify bugs in their code, and they provide companies that lack the means to recruit top-tier talent with an outlet to engage freelance hackers. Overall, bug bounty policies are quite beneficial for many companies and individuals that entrust their information to these companies.
